Essential Pharmaceuticals LLC announces the release of Cell-Ess® media supplement for cell culture and large scale bioproduction of proteins and vaccines

September 15, 2015—Essential Pharmaceuticals LLC, Ewing NJ announces the release of Cell-Ess® media supplement for cell culture and large scale bioproduction of proteins and vaccines.  This novel supplement can be added as an upfront boost or continuous feed to your already optimized host cells and media for greater protein yield. The product is chemically defined, animal component free and delivers critical components that are needed for cell growth.

Cell-Ess is the foundation of the building blocks one uses to create a robust media addressing today’s cell culture demands for bioproduction. While Cell-Ess can provide you an FBS free media for bioproduction, you don't necessarily have to rework an already optimized medium.  If you wish to continue using your media, a small addition of Cell-Ess drives compelling protein yield increase.  In a recent study Cell Ess®, used as feed at 5% (v/v), resulted in significant increase in mAb yield of over 20%.

Cell-Ess used as an initial supplement at 1% (v/v) resulted in greater than 25% increase in two independent mAbs protein yield.” says Dr Adam Elhofy, CSO of Essential Pharmaceuticals.  “It also increases product safety vs. using FBS by providing a high performance, animal component free, chemically defined alternative, when used in bio-production to synthesize proteins.”

Historically, FBS has been a critical component of cell culture media for basic research and bioproduction. FBS contains hundreds of growth factors, hormones and plating factors that help cells grow. Yet, some inherent limitations when using FBS in cell culture are that it is an animal product, containing viral and bacterial contaminants harmful to humans, isn’t consistent lot to lot, and requires special handling or processing before it can be used. These problems with FBS impact both bioproduction and basic research depending on the application or area of study.

To address those problems, Essential Pharmaceuticals released Cell-Ess as a media supplement, to be used instead of FBS, in media formulations for cell culture.  Cell-Ess enables researchers to eliminate FBS use in basic cell culture or bio-production of proteins.  Since it is chemically defined it provides a greater level of performance, convenience and control not always attainable when using FBS.

“At Essential Pharmaceuticals we aim to provide solutions to manage organs, tissues and individual cells for research purposes” says Allan Weber, CEO. Allan continued with “We are very excited to see how this new application of Cell-Ess will enable bioproduction scientists to produce better engineered proteins for therapeutic use in a chemically defined manner.”
